Posted by Nobal Niraula ( नोवल निरौला ) Saturday, December 22, 2007

A State (note the capital "S") is a self-governing political entity. The term State can be used interchangeably with country”.

  1. Nepal ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Nepal)
    1. The flag was adopted, with the formation of a new constitutional government, on December 16, 1962
    2. the only non-quadrangular national flag
    3. one of only two non-rectangular official jurisdictional flags in the world (the other is the flag of Ohio, USA)
    4. a simplified combination of two single pennants from different branches of the previous rulers
    5. It is the oldest official flag in the world.

The blue border denotes peace and harmony that has been prevalent in the country since the age of Gautam Buddha, who was born in Nepal. The crimson colour is Nepal's national colour, and it indicates the brave spirit of the Nepalese people. The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains and represent the two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. The red triangular flag has been a Hindu symbol of victory since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The depiction of celestial bodies represents permanence, the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and the moon. The moon symbolises that the Nepalese are soothing and calm, while the sun symbolises fierce resolve. The moon also symbolises the shades and the cool weather of the Himlayas whereas, the sun symbolises the hotness and the high temperature at the lower part (Tarai) of Nepal.

  1. Finland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Finland)
The flag of Finland, also called Siniristilippu (Blue Cross Flag), dates from the beginning of the 20th century, and is ultimately modelled on the Danish flag, the Dannebrog. It features a blue Nordic cross on a white background. Blue represents lakes and the sky, and white represents snow and the white nights of the Finnish summer. The state flag has a coat of arms in the centre, but is otherwise identical to the civil flag. The swallow-tailed state flag is used by the military. The presidential standard is identical to the swallow-tailed state flag but also has in its upper left corner the Cross of Liberty after the Order of the Cross of Liberty, which has the President of Finland as its Grand Master.

  1. Thailand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Thailand)
The flag of Thailand shows five horizontal stripes in the colours red, white, blue, white and red, with the middle blue stripe being twice as wide as each of the other four. The three colours red-white-blue stand for nation-religion-king, an unofficial motto of Thailand. The flag was adopted on 28 October 1917. The Thai name for the flag is ธงไตรรงค์ (Thong Trairong), which simply means tricolour flag.

  1. Philippines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Philippines)
The flag is horizontally divided into two fundamental colors, royal blue and scarlet red, with a white equilateral triangle based at the hoist side. At the center of the triangle is a golden yellow sun with eight primary rays, each containing three individual rays, and at each corner of the triangle is a five-pointed golden yellow star. The flag is displayed with the blue field on top in time of peace, and with the red field on top in time of war.

According to official sources, the white triangle stands for equality and fraternity; the blue field for peace, truth and justice; and the red field for patriotism and valor. The eight primary rays of the sun represent the first eight provinces (Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac) that sought independence from Spain and were placed under martial law by the Spaniards at the start of the Philippine Revolution in 1896. The three stars represent the three major geographical divisions of the country: Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.

  1. France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_France)
The national flag of France (known in French as drapeau tricolore, drapeau bleu-blanc-rouge, drapeau français, rarely, le tricolore and, in military parlance, les couleurs) is a tricolour featuring three vertical bands coloured blue (hoist side), white, and red.
It is known to English speakers as the French tricolour or the tricolore.

  1. Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Italy)
The flag of Italy (often referred to in Italian as Il Tricolore) is a tricolour featuring three equally sized vertical bands of green, white and red, with the green at the hoist side.

The first entity to use the Italian flag was the Cispadane Republic in 1796, after Napoleon's army crossed Italy. During this time, many small republics based on the Jacobian model, were formed and almost all used the French tricolour with different colours. The colours chosen by the Cispadane Republic were red and white, the colours of the Flag of Milan, and green which was the colour of the uniform of the Lombard Legion
